The National Taxpayer Advocate, an independent ombudsman within the Internal Revenue Service, said the agency's "declining ability to answer telephone calls" is the most serious problem facing taxpayers this year. The IRS' goal for fiscal 2010 is to answer 71 percent of calls from taxpayers seeking to speak with a live person. That's up from 70 percent in fiscal 2009 and a dismal 53 percent in 2008, but far below the previous three years, when it averaged 82 percent.

Next week's trial in San Francisco of a lawsuit challenging the initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California won't be televised live, but it will be videotaped for delayed Internet release on YouTube, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco ordered the video coverage, the first for a federal trial in California, over the objections of Proposition 8's sponsors. Their lawyer argued that allowing the proceedings to be viewed outside the courthouse would violate their right to a fair trial by intimidating their witnesses.

Hanesbrands is ending its advertising campaign featuring Charlie Sheen because of domestic violence charges filed against the actor. Company spokesman Matt Hall said Wednesday that it was a "pretty standard, straightforward call" by the brand marketing team given the allegations.
